Why Church Membership?

Here’s one reason why church membership is important:

Our lives, individually and as church congregations, should give credibility to the Gospel we proclaim. This is one of the reasons why church membership is so important. We as a church bear a corporate responsibility to present to the world what it means to be a Christian. We should understand clearly what church membership means and should help our fellow believers understand it as well. God is glorified not just by our speaking the message but by our actually living consistently with it – not that any of us can live perfectly, but we can at least try to live in a way that commends the Gospel… And remember, this involves more than just your individual life; it involves how believers live together as well. Again, remember the words of Jesus: “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another” (John 13:34-35). Live a life of committed love to the other members of your local church, as a fundamental part of your own sanctification and of your evangelistic ministry. Our individual lives alone are not a sufficient witness. Our lives together as church communities are the confirming echo of our witness. (Mark Dever, Nine Marks of a Healthy Church, 129-30)
